On the first day, Mr. Hasegawa, Executive Officer and CHO of LIVERNESS, shared with the participants the mindset required for founding a company and what is important when gathering colleagues. During the lecture, he mentioned the "hat" of a researcher and the "hat" of a manager. He told the participants that at the time of founding a company, not only a researcher's hat that thinks logically but also a manager's hat that talks about a vision to realize an uncertain future is necessary, and that it is important to choose colleagues based on empathy and mind-set, not skills.
Prior to the seminar, Mr. Shinozawa, Executive Officer of RIVANES, shared his own experience of accompanying a deep-tech venture from the start-up phase and explained the importance of implementing the QPMI (Question, Passion, Mission, Innovation) cycle, in addition to the conventional PDCA cycle, in order to create one from zero.
Each participant then organized and wrote down his or her own QPMI to deepen self-understanding, and then shared these with others to promote mutual understanding. In this session, they shared their own verbalized QPMI with others and went through the process of creating empathy. Then, by wearing a manager's hat and a researcher's hat, respectively, and making a presentation to their counterparts, the participants were challenged to make friends in the process of founding the company.
On the second day, Mr. Mizuguchi, Director and CFO of Metagen Corporation, whose vision is to "reduce diseases to zero," shared his experience of founding the company in the deep tech field. Mr. Mizuguchi talked about how he met the two future founding members of the company, how they got excited about research, and how the world they wanted to achieve overlapped with the world they wanted to create, which led to the founding of the company. He also conveyed the message that it is important for a team to develop their skills while running and respecting each other as they take on various roles, such as COO and CFO, to create an unprecedented business. Participants asked questions so actively that time was not enough.
From the latter half of the day, the pairs formed on the first day discussed the business they wanted to create and worked to incorporate their ideas into a slide presentation. Finally, in order to gather their peers, they presented the issues they wanted to solve, their visions, core technologies, etc.
The program started with self-understanding, followed by mutual understanding through self-disclosure, and then a discussion of what each party wanted to do and what was non-negotiable, in order to come up with a plan. For the next program, the participants visited each other's sites to further flesh out the plan and deepen their understanding of the issues on the ground.
