<Adopted theme

Theme: Individuality of Eelgrass Nurtured by Light and Water - Potential of Sea Grass Explored from Plant Factory

Company: Plantex Corporation

Researcher: Koiki Hiraiwa, The University of Tokyo

Below are the scholarship applications from students

Details of Cooperation

This project focuses on the growth environment of eelgrass (seagrass) and aims to elucidate the origin of the differences in the characteristics of each region. While eelgrass plays an important role in marine ecosystems, research on its growth conditions is still in its infancy. Therefore, with the cooperation of Plantex, a provider of plant factory equipment, this study will construct an experimental environment in which factors such as sunlight hours, dissolved oxygen concentration, water temperature, and salinity can be precisely controlled, and explore the correlation between these factors and the growth and compositional characteristics of eelgrass.

Reason for Application

In high school research, it was difficult to obtain reliable data due to the limitations of the control system. In this project, we hope to overcome this problem and achieve higher reproducibility and analytical accuracy by utilizing the closed control environment of a plant factory. The results will be applied to the selection and cultivation of eelgrass with many sugars suitable for "eelgrass soy sauce," as well as to activities to display eelgrass in aquariums in the "Full Course of Food" exhibition staging, a project with BIOTA.

Vision for the future

To collect data on the artificial cultivation of eelgrass and to be able to grow eelgrass in a reproducible manner. To identify a cultivation environment for eelgrass with high sugar content. To enable the sustainable display of eelgrass in the artificial environment of an aquarium.
