Details of Cooperation

One of the challenges in social implementation of robots that work with people is the "adaptation gap. This is the difference between the robot's functionality that people expected in advance and the functionality that they actually feel after actually interacting with the robot, and when expectations exceed actuality, the robot becomes "disappointing" (academically expressed as "trust is lowered") and is not used. The concept of "trust calibration" to solve this problem will be demonstrated in the ugo installation scenario.

Reason for Application

Robotics researchers and developers may make mistakes when actually using robots, but for many ordinary people, expectations are so high that they tend to spontaneously develop overconfidence and distrust without sufficient understanding or knowledge. For example, Softbank's robot Pepper has high expectations (overconfidence), which leads to many problems in social implementation, such as uncertainty about how the human side will treat the robot. Therefore, we would like to adjust human expectations based on the robot's behavior.

Vision for the future

Until the end of the activity, a hypothesis for a trust calibration method in the field where a clear human and a robot (ugo) are deployed will be developed.

Future Plans

December: Start of internship at u g o Co. and go to the site where the robot is installed. find and read the literature of application cases about trust calibration and application gaps. 

January-February: Thinking about hypotheses, in what situations do we adjust expectations between human and robot?

March: Continuation of January-February and planned experiments
