Topic Title: Investigating the Impact of Students’ Financial Literacy on Laboratory Operations: Toward Building a Sustainable Research Infrastructure
Company: Liberace Capital Inc.
Researcher: Hiroki Kamo, Doctoral Candidate, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Graduate School
Below are the scholarship applications from students.
Details of Cooperation
In this study, we will focus on differences in perceptions regarding laboratory management and research funding by conducting a survey of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students on their “ideal laboratory” and their attitudes toward research funding. In addition, we will develop a tool to visualize how research funds are used and analyze the relationship between students’ perceptions and their actual budget spending behavior.
Through this initiative, we aim to encourage students to make independent decisions and become actively involved in research management, with the goal of fostering talent capable of securing competitive grants and managing research operations in the future.
Reason for Application
Through my experience working in several different laboratories, I have come to realize that the way laboratories are run varies greatly depending on the field and scale, with differences particularly evident in how research funds are managed and in decision-making processes.
In recent years, as the research environment and funding systems have evolved, there have been instances where differences in understanding regarding the allocation and management of research funds have affected the way research activities are conducted and the degree of autonomy involved. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between these differences in perception and actual behavior, and to gain insights into how to facilitate smoother communication and decision-making within research laboratories.
Vision for the future
By developing a tool that visualizes differences in perceptions regarding research funding and laboratory operations, while also providing transparency into how research funds are used, we will create an environment where students can proactively understand budget flows. Furthermore, by analyzing the relationship between attitudes and behaviors and verifying their impact on research activities, we aim to foster the next generation of research management professionals.
